The design number that was assigned to each Cybis porcelain is one of those tiny nuggets of information that once served a useful purpose but is now of value only to research geeks like myself (and possibly others.) Originally, it indicated the genre to which the sculpture belonged and also no doubt simplified the bookkeeping when the studio was selling to their retail outlets. Although the studio always included a sculpture’s design number on their retail price lists, they never listed them that way. This page is the only compilation of Cybis sculptures to ever be listed according to design number. It will be updated whenever any new item numbers are identified.
There are a few things that should be kept in mind when using this list, however.
This list applies ONLY to Cybis pieces produced in 1950 and later. It also has nothing to do with Cordey items; those had their own design numbering system.
This list does NOT include any pieces that are signed M.B. Cybis, even though some of them had numbers (which may be either design numbers or finished-item numbers.) All of the known M.B. Cybis pieces are shown in this post which also has a list of the numbers. M.B. Cybis items are all from the 1940s and most of them are very much (and sometimes exactly!) like Cordey in appearance.
This list does not include EVERY Cybis retail piece. One reason is that many of the 1950s design number records were either not kept or were lost over time. Another is that I do not have a copy of every price list that was issued during the 1980s.
The assignment of a design number does not necessarily mean that the piece was ever introduced for retail sale. If a number was assigned initially but the studio decided not to produce it after all, they did not re-use that number for something else (as far as we know.) Thus, some design numbers will never have a corresponding retail sculpture name or description.
The design number does not necessarily indicate WHEN the piece was introduced for retail sale. Just because a piece has a lower design number than another, that does not mean that it appeared at retail earlier. There are many instances of lower design numbers in each series being introduced years after higher design numbers were.
During the early 1970s, the studio re-used several of the 700-series design numbers that had originally been given to items made during the 1950s. In those cases, both the earlier (circa 1950s) and the later (circa 1970s) items are named.
Starting in the late 1980s, Cybis departed from their traditional genre assignments of design numbers. This is a polite way of saying that in their final decade of operation, many things were done in a totally incomprehensible manner. For instance, some birds were given design numbers starting with 6 which had always been reserved only for animal figures. Some 1980s human figures were given design numbers in the 4xxx series as always, while others were assigned numbers beginning with 5 (the 5xxxx series had formerly only been used for flowers.) I have indicated all of these in the best fashion I could.
In the late 1980s, Cybis changed their design numbers from three- and four-digit to five-digit. Their 1986 catalog exhibits their traditional format, but their 1988 price list has altered each design number to a five-digit format. To make things even worse, the two new digits that were added follow no logical pattern. Thus, Mr. Snowball who had always been design #611 became design #20611, but Funny Face who had always been #488 was changed to #23488. I have absolutely no idea why they did not follow a consistent number change format. Because the vast majority of Cybis pieces were introduced before this number-format change, I have chosen to ignore the arbitrarily-added first two digits and have instead listed them as their original design number of either three or four digits. The acronym FUBAR aptly describes what the Cybis design numbering system became in the late 1980s and after!
How to Use This List
Number identification gaps of six or more are indicated by ### THROUGH ### UNKNOWN.
If you know the name of a sculpture you can search this page (using Ctrl F in Windows, Smart Search Bar in Safari) for it. If I know its design number you will find the name here. If not, with luck I may find and add it here at a later date.
If you want to see a specific Cybis piece named here, go to the Name Index Page where it will be listed alphabetically with a link to the Archive page that shows and describes it. Because I suspect that more people will be looking for a Cybis piece via its name rather its design number (which most never pay attention to, frankly) the page links are there rather than here. The Visual Index does not include any religious-genre Cybis items.
If you happen to have a Cybis piece (especially one from the 1950s) that has a number written on the underside that is not shown here, please contact me via the form on the Contact page and let me know what your piece is so that I can add it to the list. Many thanks!
