Tracking the Smallest-Edition Cybis Sculptures

American porcelain art studios tended to offer larger limited-edition quantities than did their counterparts in England: An edition of 100 would be considered typical or average there, whereas here that same quantity was seen as being much more exclusive. Let’s take a look at that upper echelon of Cybis sculptures and see if we can get some idea of how many of them may still physically exist today – a sort of ‘Where are they now?’ overview.

For this purpose I’ve chosen an edition size of 100 as the maximum, partly because of that original across-The-Pond difference in perception but also because there were very few edition sizes between 100 and 200, and all of those were introductions from the 1960s or the first half of the 1970s.

This list does not include any of the so-called one-of-a-kind sculptures because there definitely more than one made of each. For example, two un-numbered and partially finished examples of the OOAK Saint Peter have been found. Nor does it include any of the numerous examples that were marked A.P. instead of with a retail-sales number, because there is no way to track any of those through the years. The quantities below are the declared or actual (whichever applies, if different) edition sizes that were produced for Cybis retailers to sell.

Porcelain being such a fragile medium, it’s certain that many of them have not survived through the decades. However, I’ve logged the ones that were still with us as of their most recent sale date; if any reader has any others and would like to have their existence recorded here as simply “currently in a private collection”, there is a contact form link at the bottom of the post. :-)

The sculptures in each edition size category are listed in alphabetical order, with the known survivors listed by their sculpture number.

Editions of 25 or Fewer

Australian Greater Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos (1982)

It is not known how many of the declared edition of 25 were actually made. None have sold online that I know of.

Charging Buffaloes (1983)

CHARGING BUFFALOES by Cybis#20 sold at Wickliff Auctions in January 2019.

This retail replica of the one-of-a-kind American Buffaloes sculpture from 1979 was an edition of 25.  In addition to the #20 cited above, an example with an undisclosed sculpture number sold in September 2024 at E.J.’s Auctions; it had five broken-off grass blades and a detached ‘stone’.

Commemorative Chess Set (1979)

This very close replica of the presidential-gift 1972 Chess Set was introduced at retail in 1979 as an edition of 10 sets. As explained in the Chess Set post, a collector in New Jersey purchased either the #1 or #2 set (my contact, who delivered it personally, does not recall which of those two set numbers it was.)

The #5 set was sold at Leland Little Auctions in 2019. The whereabouts of the other eight sets are unknown.

Holy Child of Prague (1957)

Originally a declared edition of 25 in 1957, only 10 were supposedly made. The final example was reportedly completed in 1973. There is one known to be in a private collection as of about four years ago but it has no visible sculpture number. The Child of Prague pieces have their own Archive post. In a major update in April 2025, it now contains a list of which retailers either received or were slated to receive the first 22 examples of this sculpture.

Holy Child of Prague Plaque (1980)

HOLY CHILD OF PRAGUE PLAQUE by Cybis#8 sold at Garth’s Auctions in July 2020.
#9 sold on eBay in April 2010.

The declared edition of 25 was supposedly completed the same year that it was released. It’s known that George Ivers painted some of these, as well as having designed the plaque itself.

Knight in Shining Armor (1989)

#10 sold at Wickliff Auctions in January 2019.

This was a declared editon of 25 but this is the only example that I have ever seen for sale other than the one that was on permanent display at the Cybis studio. It has been claimed that the studio did indeed make ten of these but I cannot confirm that and so am taking it with a grain of salt, especially given that they no longer had any full-time artists to work on producing something like this.

Moses the Great Lawgiver Plaque  (1981)

MOSES PORCELAIN PLAQUE by Cybis#9 sold at Clearing House Estate Sales in November 2024.

When this plaque was introduced in Spring 1981, the declared edition was given as 50. However, in the Spring 1982 and later price lists, the edition size is shown as 25. The actual number made is unknown.

Swan Lake’s Odette (1987)

SWAN LAKES ODETTE AND SIEGFRIED by Cybis view 1#22 sold at Neal Auctions in March 2023.

When introduced in 1987 with great fanfare (and a hefty price) the declared edition was 100. Several years later the edition size was supposedly reduced to only 15. See this post for a discussion of the sculpture number/final edition size discrepancies.

Editions of 50

Dall Sheep (1982)

DALL SHEEP by Cybis#8 sold on eBay in October 2023.
#16 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.

A friend of mine bought one of these on eBay in 2014 or 2015, but passed away a couple of years later and his Cybis collection was dispersed by a local Reno, NV auction house. I believe that his was a lower number than the 2023 sale. It is not known how many of the edition of 50 were actually made.

Exodus (1960)

EXODUS by Cybis view 1#5 sold on eBay in January 2018.
#31 sold on eBay in September 2014.
#43 sold on eBay in August 2024.

The edition of 50 was completed in 1966. Special Note: I now have a list of what retailer originally received each one of these sculptures from Cybis. If you have one and would like to know who and when that was, I will be happy to look that up for you. There is a Contact Form link at the bottom of this page.

Flight into Egypt (1960)

#22 sold at Déjà vu Estate Sales in May 2022.

This was declared edition of 50 that was completed in 1966 when the final sculpture left the studio. Special Note: I now have a list of what retailer originally received each one of these sculptures from Cybis. If you have one and would like to know who and when that was, I will be happy to look that up for you. There is a Contact Form link at the bottom of this page.

Great Horned Owl ‘KooKoosKoos’ in color (1975)

GREAT HORNED OWL KOOS KOOS KOOS in color by Cybis#28 sold at Dumouchelles Auctions in October 2018.
#33 sold on eBay in April 2016.
#40 sold on eBay in November 2020.
#46 sold at O’Gallerie Auctions in March 2018.
#50 sold on Everything But the House in March 2016.

The two colorways of this 1975 introduction had different edition sizes: 50 of the color/brown bird, and 150 of the white/albino. Both editions were completed.

Holy Child of Prague II (1989 HOF replica edition) declared edition of 50

HOLY CHILD OF PRAGUE II Hall of Fame Edition by CybisOne of these appeared for sale briefly on eBay in 2016 but unfortunately, I failed to make note of the sculpture number. It did not sell. I have no idea how many of the declared edition of 50 were actually made.

Love Song Rose (1984)

#12 sold at Dumouchelles Auctions in October 2017.
#35 came up for auction at Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches in July 2003 but did not sell.

This was introduced as an edition of 100 but was rather quickly cut down to an edition of only 50, which was completed in 1987.

Mother Bear with Three Cubs (1983)

MOTHER BEAR WITH CUBS by Cybis#19 sold at Hudson Valley Auctions in January 2018.

The declared edition of 100 was reduced to only 50 before it was completed in 1987.

The Prophet (1960)

THE PROPHET by Cybis#2 sold via a local Reno, NV estate sale in 2015.
#22 sold on eBay in November 2020.
#33 sold on eBay in May 2018.
#43 sold on eBay in September 2014.
#45 sold on eBay in December 2016.

The edition of 50 was completed in 1969.

White-Tailed Deer (1986)

WHITE TAILED DEER by Cybis#2 sold on eBay in November 2015.

It is not known whether the declared edition of 50 was ever completed.

Editions of 100

All of the following sculptures were initially declared to be editions of 100, although only some are known to have reached that goal. If I don’t know whether 100 were actually made, that is indicated in my comments.

American White Turkey (1975)

AMERICAN WHITE TURKEY by Cybis#7 sold at Nye & Co Auctions in February 2023.
#17 sold at Ivey-Selkirk Auctions in December 2005.
#38 sold on eBay in November 2017.
#45 sold at Bramlett Auctions in August 2024.
#49 sold at Dumouchelles Auctions in July 2019.
#99 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.

Each of the two colorways was its own edition of 100. Both were completed in 1980.

American Wild Turkey (1975)

AMERICAN WILD TURKEY by Cybis#24 sold at Clars Auctions in May 2024.

Notice that this example is complete with its original base, whereas the white one in the previous photo is missing theirs.

Arctic Fox (1980)

ARCTIC FOX by Cybis#6 was sold privately in May 2023.
#32 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.
#33 sold at Dumouchelles Auctions in Sept. 2011.
#60 sold at Neal Auctions in March 2023.
#77 sold on eBay in March 2013.
#81 sold at Freedom Auctions in November 2024.

Cybis price lists indicate that this edition was completed.

Birth/Nativity at Lowicz

#11 sold at Neal Auctions in March 2023.

The introduction year and edition size of this piece is unknown because I am missing several Cybis price lists/brochures from the mid-late 1980s. However, given that it is clearly a companion piece to the ‘Polish Bride’ which was an edition of 100, it is safe to assume this probably was an edition of 100 also. Although four have been seen so far, two were un-numbered backstock from the studio liquidation, and the other two are marked A.P. instead of with a number.  It’s impossible to know how many numbered ones were made and sold, other than the #11 cited above. I suspect that there were very few.

Bull ‘God of the Thunderbolt’ (1960)

BULL GOD OF THE THUNDERBOLT by Cybis#32 was sold on eBay in October 2020.
#45 sold at Soulis Auctions in November 2015.
#49 sold at Kodner Auctions in October 2024.
#54 is currently for sale on eBay (February 2025)
#78 sold on eBay in December 2017.
#87 sold on eBay in January 2014.
#93 sold on eBay in January 2025.
#99 sold at Stampler Auctions in April 2013.
A smudged-number example sold on eBay in September 2024.

This final piece of this edition was shipped out from Cybis in July 1968. Special Note: I now have a list of what retailer originally received each one of these sculptures from Cybis. If you have one and would like to know who and when that was, I will be happy to look that up for you. There is a Contact Form link at the bottom of this page.

Camellia ‘Pink Taffeta’ (1986)

CAMELLIA PINK TAFFETA by CybisThis is the only online sale I have ever found of this piece. The auction house had only this one photo and gave no information other than titling it “Cybis pink flower”.  I have no idea how many of these were made, but it is not on the 1987 Cybis price list which indicates that it truly was a “here today, gone tomorrow” edition!

Colonial Flower Basket (1976)

COLONIAL FLOWER BASKET by Cybis#3 sold on eBay in November 2013.
#13 sold on eBay in January 2019.
#39 sold at Freeman/Hindman Auctions in January 2022.

This edition was completed in 1978.

Cree ‘Magic Boy’ in white (1971)

#2? (see note below) sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.
#3 sold at Woody Auctions in April 2016.
#8 sold at Loon Estates in January 2024.
#11 sold at Gray’s Auctions in December 2018.
#27 is in a private collection.
#37 sold at Austin Auctions in May 2014.
#42 sold at Wickliff Auctions in January 2022.
#45 sold at Jacksons Auctions in October 2006.
#48 sold at Stephenson’s Auctions in May 2013.
#53 sold at Kodner Auctions in January 2024.

This edition was completed in 1973. The uncertainty over the first one on the list is because there is a smudged area immediately adjacent to the sculpture number; it’s small enough that it could be a smudged #2..or a number in the 20s with the second digit mostly removed. The base has an aftermarked brass plaque affixed to it.

Elephant (1968)

ELEPHANT in white by Cybis#4 sold at Dumouchelles Auctions in Oct. 2018.
#6 sold on eBay in November 2024.
#8 is currently for sale on eBay (February 2025).
#11 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.
#70 sold at Cordier Auctions in May 2007.
#94 sold at Freeman/Hindman Auctions in February 2024.

This edition was completed in 1972.

Golden Clarion Lily (1961)

GOLDEN CLARION LILY by Cybis

#4 sold on eBay in August 2019.
#8 sold on eBay in April 2021.
#62 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.

The edition was completed in 1966, with the final sculpture shipping in 1967. Special Note: I now have a list of what retailer originally received each one of these sculptures from Cybis. If you have one and would like to know who and when that was, I will be happy to look that up for you. There is a Contact Form link at the bottom of this page.

Gyrfalcon (1987)

GYRFALCON by CybisThis is a troubling case of the original declared edition size of 25 (in 1987) suddenly being inflated to an edition of 100 the very next year. I have no idea whether the original 1987 brochure and price list were accidentally printed up with the wrong edition size and then corrected afterward in the 1988 and later price lists, or whether the studio arbitrarily decided to quadruple the edition size shortly after introduction. In either case, if I were a collector who bought one of these believing that there would be only 24 others, I’d have been unhappy about the change. I have never seen one come up for sale other than an unfinished damaged example from the studio’s liquidation sales in 2019, however.

Horse (1961)

#87 sold at Weiss Auctions in November 2006.

The edition was completed in 1966. Special Note: I now have a list of what retailer originally received each one of these sculptures from Cybis. If you have one and would like to know who and when that was, I will be happy to look that up for you. There is a Contact Form link at the bottom of this page.

Kateri Tekakwitha ‘Lily of the Mohawks’ (1981)

KATERI TEKAKWITHA Lily of the Mohawks by Cybis#10 sold at Loon Estates in January 2024.
#28 sold on eBay in April 2012.
#38 sold on Everything But the House in October 2023.
#41 sold on eBay in August 2016.

The edition was completed in 1984.

Liberty (original edition, 1985)

LIBERTY by Cybis original edition#10 sold on eBay in July 2021 (sprig is missing)
#19 sold on eBay in February 2016.
#20 sold at Lion & Unicorn Auctions in June 2024.
#38 sold on eBay in March 2016.
#73 sold on eBay in May 2011 (missing flag, medallion, and sprig)
#75 sold on eBay in December 2012 (missing flag, medallion, sprig, and base)
#90 sold on eBay in July 2019 (missing flag, medallion, sprig, and base)

This edition was completed before the end of 1987. As you can see, certain elements seem to chronically go missing from this sculpture. ‘Sprig’ refers to the sprig of olive leaves that Liberty holds in her left hand (in a mint condition example). Sellers tend to confuse the three editions of Liberty with each other despite the physical size and painting differences. See the Born in the USA post for illustrations and details of all three.

Magnolia ‘Southern Belle’ (1986)

MAGNOLIA SOUTHERN BELLE by CybisThis is another problematic edition size because of conflicting Cybis information. One list says it was an edition of 50, yet another says it was a completed edition of 100. Your guess is as good as mine, but personally I believe that the most they made was probably 50. I have never seen one offered for sale online.

Nashua (1971)

NASHUA by Cybis#69 sold on eBay in June 2007.
#70 sold at Wardlow Auctions in February 2025.
#71 sold on eBay in November 2016.
#172 sold on eBay in April 2016.
#263 sold on eBay in January 2014
#279 sold on eBay in October 2022.

This is the most whopping edition-size-slashing ever seen for a Cybis: Out of the declared edition of 500 in 1971, production was stopped in 1976 after only 100 had been made. ‘But wait!’ I hear you say, ‘How can that be, when three of the five that we know were made and sold have numbers so much higher than 100?’ Such edition size/number discrepancies are discussed in a separate post.

Pink Dogwood ‘Blush of Spring’ (1986)

PINK DOGWOOD BLUSH OF SPRING by CybisI have never seen an online sale of this piece and have no idea how many of them were made. This is a re-working of the old open-edition Wood Wren with Dogwood by deleting the bird and the nest, and replacing the flower petal molds with a more realistic style.  Frankly, I’m somewhat surprised that they made this as a limited edition.

Plaque, Autumn Glow (1983)

AUTUMN GLOW plaque by Cybis#8 sold at Kaminski Auctions in October 2015.
#35 sold on eBay in January 2020.

These ‘Four Seasons’ framed plaques are an edition-size anomaly. When introduced, their declared edition size was 100 per design. However, a source told me that only 60 of each design were made. Because the editions were never stated by Cybis as having been completed, the actual number that were made remains a mystery.

Plaque, Spring Promise (1982)

SPRING PROMISE plaque by Cybis#3 sold at Kaminski Auctions in October 2015.
#20 sold on eBay in August 2022.
#39 sold on eBay in March 2024.
#35 sold on eBay in January 2020.

Plaque, Summer Dreams (1982)

SUMMER DREAMS plaque by Cybis#3 sold at Kaminski Auctions in October 2015.
#10 sold at One Stop Auction Shop in March 2024.
#20 sold on eBay in August 2022.
#35 was sold on eBay in January 2020.

Plaque, Winter Song

WINTER SONG plaque by Cybis#8 sold at Kaminski Auctions in October 2015.
#35 sold on eBay in January 2020.

Screech Owl and Siblings

SCREECH OWL AND SIBLINGS by Cybis#1 sold on eBay in February 2024.

Because I am missing some price lists, the exact intro year of this edition is unknown other than being between 1985 and 1988. The actual number made is unknown.

Spirit of Ecstasy (1979)

SPIRIT OF ECSTASY Rolls Royce Flying Lady by Cybis view 2This was a private commission with a complicated history; only 100 numbered ones were made. For the details, see this post.

Swans in Motion pair (1988)

SWANS IN MOTION by CybisThese were first sold only as a pair. It is hard to see the dark wood base in this official Cybis photo, but it is there. A year or so later, the studio offered them separately as Swan (wings up) and Swan (wings out), as additional editions of 100 each. I have never seen any of these for sale online, and have no indication or proof that any were sold.

The Phoenix (1982)

#37 sold at Elite Auctions in March 2022.

The actual number of these made is uncertain because I am missing several price lists from the mid-1980s. It is no longer on their lists as of early 1988.

The (Polish) Bride (1980)

THE BRIDE by Cybis view 1#10 sold on eBay in March 2025.
#18 sold at Neal Auctions in March 2023.
#23 sold on eBay in November 2024.
#29 sold at Stephenson’s Auctions in May 2013.
#31 sold on eBay in November 2015.
#42 sold on eBay in December 2016.z
#51 is currently for sale at an antique store near St. Louis
#54 sold at American Eagle Auctions in October 2022
#57 is in the holdings of the Museum of American Porcelain Art.
#60 sold at Freedom Auctions in November 2024.
#63 sold at World Auction Gallery in June 2024.
#71 sold on eBay in Sept 2024.
#73 sold at Clearing House Estate Sales in November 2024.
#76 sold on eBay in August 2020.
#95 is in the holdings of the Museum of American Porcelain Art.

It is interesting to see how many of these have come up for sale during the past five years. The actual selling prices of most of them can be seen on the Recent Sales page, if you’re interested…and keep in mind that the introduction price of this piece was $6500! The edition was ‘completed’ (meaning spoken for) in 1982 although not all the pieces were delivered to the retailers by then. She has her own Archive post.

The Pope (1989)

14″ high version #33 sold on eBay in August 2024.
12″ high version #30 sold on eBay in December 2005.

As shown in his own post, there were several iterations/editions of this same bust but only the two largest mold sizes were small editions. Both of them were introduced in 1989 (spring and fall.) Both were available in color decoration or in white, but only the color edition of these sizes had a declared edition of 100. The white versions were an edition of 200. The one shown above is the 14″ high color version which came with a base. The slightly-downsized 12″ high version was also in color but did not come with a base. There is no indication that any of the multiple Pope editions were ever completed.

One might argue that the sculptures shown above are the ‘rarest’ editions that the Cybis studio made, based strictly on how many were supposedly produced. But that wouldn’t take the breakage factor into account, nor – in many cases – the uncertainly about how many of the 1980s-onward editions were actually made. We can be sure of the 1960s and 1970s small editions but once into the mid-1980s things get really murky. Cybis was still advertising most of those on their website well into the 1990s even though they were only making most things only on a to-order basis. It is safe to say that none of the 1990s limited editions were ever completed, i.e., the studio never produced as many as they said they would. This is especially true for the large-quantity (1000+) editions which were purely aspirational; the actual sales were a small fraction of that, at best. And their asking prices for the smaller-quantity editions, such as (for example) the $12,500 Swans in Motion pair, flew directly in the face of economic reality.  And then, of course, we have the ‘overnumbering’ situation to contend with!

In any case, I think it will be interesting to track as many of these theoretically-rarest Cybis editions as possible. As can be seen for quite a few that are on the Recent Sales page, the current market value doesn’t necessarily correlate to how many we know to have been made! Again, I will be happy to add any private collection examples to the above list if any owner would like to let me know that theirs still exist. :-)
