The ‘Top Five’ Designers of Cybis Porcelain

We now shift focus from the smallest (smallest limited editions) to the largest: This post identifies the top five sculptors who created the modern-day Cybis porcelains, in terms of how many sculptures they created for the studio (whether or not they were released by Cybis as retail items.) Retail editions that were sold as a pair count as two separate designs because each sculpture was different. However, a piece that was produced by Cybis as two separate colorway editions (such as the white and the brown Great Horned Owl) counts as only one design because they were both cast from the same mold.

#1 – Lynn Klockner Brown

Far ahead of the pack is Lynn Klockner Brown!  As described in detail within her Artist Profile, she created 76 pieces for Cybis. All but four were introduced as retail pieces. As of June 2025, Lynn at age 89 is the only surviving artist of this ‘top five’.

#2 – Susan Clark Eaton

Sue Eaton comes in second with 39 sculptures. Her Artist Profile also shows the series that she created for Lenox. Sue began as an in-house Cybis artist at age 25 but switched to a freelance status only a few years afterward.

Sue’s 39th piece for Cybis existed only as a clay model and there seems to be no surviving photo. It was a large group showing the main characters of The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, the Cybis studio chose not to attempt to get permission from copyright owners of Oz to produce the sculpture, and so it never got beyond that stage.

#3 – A tie between Gertrude Fass and George Ivers (but with a caveat)

(Caveat: George Ivers’ count of 30 includes two pieces which are a combination of a fairy and a creature, and there is a possibility that the fairies may have been created by a different artist. However, Gertrude Fass definitely created 30 sculptures herself and so I am listing her first.)

Freelance artist Gertrude Fass created 30 sculptures for Cybis, 27 of which were retail productions. All of them are human studies. Her Profile was recently added to the Archive; she passed away in 2005.

Limited Editions (7): Camille, King David, Leda and the Swan, Othello, Queen of Sheba, Scheherazade, Robin

Open Editions (20):  Adoration, Angel ‘Annunciation’, Ballerina ‘Recital’, Bedtime Beth, Bedtime Jody, Cheerful Dragon, Choir Boy, Cupid in Flight, David as a Shepherd Boy, Edward, Felicia Flutist, Flower Girl, Lotus Blossom, Madonna ‘Queen of Peace’, Marguerite Mandolinist, Mother of Love, Psyche, Ring Bearer, Vanessa Violinist, Victoria

Created for Cybis but not produced by them for retail (3): Mexican Boy Head, Mexican Girl Head, and Sinbad the Sailor.

The type of items created by George Ivers, either for or while Art Director at Cybis (see his Artist Profile for a timeline) differs from the other artists in this post because most are décor items such as plaques, vases, etc. The twelve individual Limnette series editions are hand-accented decal replicas of his original 12 small paintings on flat pieces of porcelain. Mr. Ivers died of complications of Parkinson’s Disease in 2001.

Limited Editions (2): Holy Child of Prague Plaque, Moses Plaque

Open Editions (28):

Decorative Animals (2): Ladybug ‘Duchess of Seven Rosettes’, Turtle ‘The Baron’

Fantasy Figures*: Marigold on Turtle, Ariel on Grasshopper

Décor Items (24): 1983 Decorative Egg, 1984 Decorative Egg, 1985 Decorative Egg, 1986 Decorative Egg, Bacchus Vase, Daisy Vase, Ginger Jar, Iris Candlesticks, Iris Compote, Iris Vase, Limnette series ‘Everyone’s Fun Time’ (4 different designs), Limnette Series ‘The Wonderful Seasons’ (4 different designs), Limnette series ‘When Bells Are Ringing’ (4 different designs), Rose Jar, Unicorn Vase

*It’s not known whether George Ivers created the fairy figures as well as the turtle and the grasshopper. Also, Marigold’s turtle is a decorative adaptation of his earlier ‘The Baron’ mold. It is not known whether George created the 12 Days of Christmas ornaments and so I have not counted those. It is assumed that he added the fine details on The (Polish) Bride but nobody has ever suggested that he created her body or the floral headdress. However, I have spoken to someone who actually saw him creating the two limited edition plaques listed above.

#4 – Charles Oldham

‘Chuck’ Oldham actually created 23 sculptures for Cybis, but because the studio so drastically altered one of them almost beyond recognition, he did not want to be associated with its final retail iteration. Because of such a significant change I did not count it here, and so he occupies the #4 spot with 22 pieces. His work in porcelain and bronze can be seen in his Artist Profile; he passed away in 2014.

Birds (7): American Bald Eagle, American Turkey, Great Horned Owl ‘KooKoosKoos’, Gyrfalcon, Screech Owl with Siblings, Swan in Motion (wings up), Swan in Motion (wings out)

#5 – Lazslo Ispanky

All of Ispanky’s figures for Cybis were created during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Fourteen of the 19 pieces below are listed in his self-published 1986 catalog as having been designed by him; one which he claimed to have designed has recently been proved to have been created decades earlier by a different sculptor. After leaving the Cybis studio during the 1960s, he worked on his own and also for Goebel. I will be adding his Artist Profile to the Archive later this year. Mr. Ispanky died in 2010.

The Marylin Chorlton Dilemma

It pains me to have to leave Marylin Chorlton out of the top five, but sadly we know almost nothing about which specific Cybis pieces she sculpted. We do know, from anecdotes reported in interviews during the 1960s and 1970s, and from information obtained from artists at the studio, that she created these:

Known Limited Edition(s): Portia. She reportedly also collaborated with Patricia Eakin on the Holy Child of Prague and the Turtle Doves ‘Doves of Peace’ but it’s not known how much of either two she actually sculpted.

Known Open Editions (9): Burro ‘Fitzgerald’, Christopher the Sea Listener, Funny Face (but Bill Pae made the hat), Little Red Riding Hood (cloak and hood by Bill Pae), Gretel, Rebecca, Rusty and Jonny Playing Marbles, Skipper and Jens Playing Leapfrog, Yankee Doodle Dandy

I am certain that Marylin must have created more than ten Cybis sculptures. We cannot go by the various press or catalog photos of Marylin, because some of them show her with a sculpture that we know for sure was created by someone else (Ispanky’s Little Blue Heron, Lynn Brown’s Pegasus, etc.). Thus, it is impossible to place her anywhere within the top five in terms of quantity. She lost her battle with cancer in 1977.
